Insurance for Contractors
Every contractor who does paid work. Most customers and all commercial properties require proof of insurance.
Do this first
Get a general liability (GL) insurance quote today. You can usually get a certificate of insurance (COI) the same day you bind the policy. Do not do your first paid job without it.
- 1.Determine what coverage you need: general liability (GL) is the baseline for all contractors
- 2.Check if your state requires workers compensation insurance (required in most states if you have employees)
- 3.Get quotes from at least 3 sources: one online marketplace, one independent agent, and one trade-specific option
- 4.Compare: coverage limits, deductibles, exclusions, and whether completed operations are covered
- 5.Bind the policy and download your Certificate of Insurance (COI)
- 6.Set up your COI to be easily shareable — some platforms let you email it directly to customers
- 7.Add additional insureds when required by commercial clients or general contractors
- 8.Consider commercial auto insurance if you use any vehicle for business (personal auto policies exclude business use)
- 9.Review your policy annually — as you add employees, equipment, or revenue, your coverage needs change
- 10.Keep your policy active continuously — gaps in coverage can affect future premiums and contract eligibility
Cheapest path
Get online quotes from Next Insurance, Thimble, or Simply Business. Many GL policies for solo contractors start at $30–$80/month depending on trade and state. You can often bind the policy and get your COI the same day.
